has filed a patent with the US patents office for a phone that can work continuously without requiring to be plugged in for a recharge. The phone will convert energy from the owner’s motion to charge itself.

The phone, having heavier components, such as the radio transmitter circuit and battery, are supported on a sturdy frame. The frame can move along sides and in up and down direction with the help of rails fitted inside the phone. The rails will have strips of piezoelectric crystals that would generate current when compressed by the frame and the motion generates electricity. This charge is then fed into the battery, keeping the phone charged-up through movements such as walking or shaking. The idea is similar to the one which is being used in watches, which use motion to charge their batteries.

Since this is just a patent application, it might take a few years for Nokia to use piezoelectricity and kinetic energy in their phones. We are really excited to hear more about this from Nokia.
